Dream vintage bike buiild: Bridgestone RB-1 (A Steel Icon!)

The Bridgestone RB1 is one of the most iconic steel road bikes, and I'm restoring one back to its original glory. The Bridgestone RB-1 emerged in the late 1980s as a result of a collaboration between Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone and Grant Petersen, a notable bicycle designer. Renowned for its steel frame, the RB-1 gained popularity for its exceptional craftsmanship and performance, an...

    If it were mine I'd get an aluminum crankset and chainrings for it. That department store grade all-steel setup looks wicked cheap (because it is cheap). I don't care much about originality when it comes to bikes, because upgrading them is fun. I would do "period correct" upgrades though; not because I care about the concept of "period correct" in and of itself, but because 1970s and 1980s parts looked drastically better than modern parts, so I'd look for e.g., a Sugino crankset from that era (in keeping with the bike being made in Japan). And it wouldn't have a chain guard ring attached to the spider and I'd get rid of the "dork disk" behind the cassette. The aluminum SR stem is nice already so I'd keep that, but I'd get some aluminum handlebars (e.g., Nitto). I'd also want some aluminum rims (e.g., Araya), aluminum hubs (e.g., Suzue), and butted stainless steel spokes. I'd probably get an aluminum headset (e.g., Tange) and seat post with integrated "seat guts" too (e.g., Nitto or SR). The brakes and levers are okay, but I'd ditch those ridiculous and risky-to-use secondary levers. I completely agree with the Brooks seat upgrade, though I prefer the B17. Upgrading the crankset would be the most important thing for me though, since that's the heart of the bike, and just doing that and nothing else would make me about 90% happy with it.

    I've got a '93 RB-1 in the rare size of 54.5 (Bridgestone made that size for just 3 years, '92-'94). It was an Ebay purchase in 2015. Like yours, mine is yellow and white. One of the original Shimano shifters wore out, so I replaced it with Micro-Shifters, and left it an 8-speed. The crank is original, though I replaced the 53/42 rings with a 52/38 (lots of steep hills here in Baltimore County). Front and rear derailers and brakes are original. The original stem I replaced with a H20, just the right size for me, and a Thompson Elite seat post now holds firm the saddle, something the cheesy original, single bolt seat post couldn't. I'm usually the only one on group rides riding a steel frame, and that includes my other bike, an '86 Schwinn Paramount, just about all original.

      @@JustinDoesTriathlon You might know that the '93 came with a Richey crown fork. I once had a '90 RB-1 in 56cc. The top tube was just too long, so I sold it. Bridgestone sizes jumped from a 53cc (too small for me) to 56cc (too big as noted) until they finally brought out the 54.5cc size in 1992. I lucked out on Ebay.

    Justin, I appreciated your approach to this review, a mix of philosophy, software development, and functionality. As an older cyclist, I have come a long way since the clicker mounted on my front wheel that I used when I rode cross country. I finally graduated to the Lezyne, and now I have the Wahoo Bolt V2. One of my real frustrations is how the rerouting function works. I cue a lot of tours, and sometimes I want to cut off mileage. Why does the unit always try and take me back to where I left the route? Maybe I have a setting wrong? I just end up turning rerouting off. Other than that, I am happy with the unit, going on 3 years.

The chain just broke and local bike shop says they can't fix these old broken chains (small town).. I felt discouraged, came home & found your video - so encouraging that it CAN be done. Any suggestions on how & where to look in Ohio.?

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon Месяц назад

      Thanks so much! That's awesome that you have a Twinn! It 100% can be fixed. I know nothing about Ohio but I find it a little suspect that a bike shop can't fix a chain, that's crazy. I found a post on bikeforums from someone in a similar situation to you (linked at the end of comment) Basically, they were told to buy two 5/6 speed bike chains. If you've got the old chain, that's gold, because you know exactly how long to make it. And then all you would need is a chain breaker tool (7-$10 on Amazon.) Try to confirm it with a little more checking of what you've got, but a KMC 5/6 speed chain ($10) and a chain tool ($10) should get you most of the way up and running! I’ve also linked a Park Tool video that will walk you through replacing the chain. You can do it! :D ruclips.net/video/VdUQKVMPF5I/видео.html www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/756346-chain-question-my-schwinn-tandem.html

    Hi Justin -- thanks so much for the videos. You said your wetsuit is the maximum thickness. So is it a 5mm? Does it restrict movement? I need a wetsuit for the 70.3 IM and I am worried about the open water swim so I want the most buoyant possible. But don't want it restricting swimming movement.

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon Месяц назад

      Yeah good question! The Xterra is a 5mm yes, (not 100% 5mm, thinner in the arms, etc, but a good amount of 5mm). I've actually since bought a new Roka suit. The Xterra was fine but with its age it was getting quite delicate and getting small tears every time I put it on. There's more to flexibility than thickness, though in general, the thicker, the less fvlexible it is. I feel like my Roka has better shoulder mobility than my Xterra did (and also, the Roka is a bit thinner in general.) If you're going for bouancy, look for 5mm chest and legs. For most people, it's the legs/hips that really drop down. TBH though, even with my thinner Roka, it feels like swimming with floaties on. They all add noticable flotation vs. nothing. Have fun!

      @@JustinDoesTriathlon Thanks so much for the response. I will check out the Roka. I definitely want something that feels like I have floaties on!

      @@user-fi5kf1cg2o You got it! FWIW I didn't mean to imply that the Roka is more bouyant or anything, and I'm also comparing a brand new suit vs a suit from... 2010 I think. So it's possible there are much better suits out there. I just kinda picked one at random. :P IT feels good though.

      @@JustinDoesTriathlon Yeah sounds fine. You got me the information I need and for that I am thankful to you. I'll check out a bunch seem similar and get something. It's going to be a while until I do the IM 70.3 so I have some time to figure it out. Just trying to figure it out now. I run and bike a ton, so I have no concerns there, but the swimming part has me all nervous and anxious. I don't want to end up as fish food a half mile into the swim, or suffer a panic attack while out there. You've been great, thanks.

      Sorry -- follow up. Is your Roka a 3/2mm or thicker?

    The radar will "stop you from getting hit" ???? HOW???? Every time you see a car, do you jump in the bushes? If a car is going to hit you, it will hit you. Radar or not.

    This review is 2 years old. And nothing changed. A simple smartphone for the same price performs better then these top cycling products... I've been waiting for some revolution and Hammerhead with it's Android based units could be the thing... but no... another laggy peace of sht.
